Mayor’s Message

Mayor Gail Giles-Gidney

Welcome to Willoughby City Council’s 2019 Emerge Festival, the largest cultural and entertainment celebration on Sydney’s North Shore.

Now celebrating its 22nd year the six-week festival has over 80 free and affordable events bringing an exciting, colourful and creative flare to Spring. The events are split into six categories: all day events, arts, children, music, workshops and discover – it’s easier than ever to find events to tempt the whole family.

StreetFair, the North Shore’s biggest street party returns to the Chatswood CBD on Saturday 7 September. Celebrate Willoughby’s diversity as over 800 people march, dance and perform in the annual street parade from 10.30am. Check out this year’s new additions including a free rock climbing wall and a ‘zen hub’ with yoga and guided meditation.

The Pet Festival will come alive with activities for pets and their human companions on 21 September at its new home OH Reid Oval, Chatswood West. Enjoy doggy fashion parades, free caricatures and international food markets while you meet your furry neighbours.

If you’re yet to experience our magnificent Willoughby Symphony the Emerge Festival program has not one but two of their terrific concerts. Traditional classical music lovers will delight in Bravura led by Grammy-nominated conductor and artistic director Dr Nicholas Milton AM. Or experience toe-tapping classics at the Tribute to George Michael concert on 7 September.

I’d like to offer a big thank you to everyone who contributed to this year’s Emerge Festival. To all our valued sponsors, partners, event organisers, facilitators, educators, artists, performers and volunteers – it’s wonderful to see our community come together.

Spring is a wonderful time in Willoughby. I look forward to seeing you out and about enjoying the many festivities. Share your images and experiences with #emergefestival. Enjoy!
