When Stroke Steals Words

The exhibition “Talking Heads” presents an exhibition of painting, drawing and mixed media by Visual Voices. This art group was established in 2014 by Christine Sheard, originally as a Macquarie University speech pathology research project for adults with Stroke (Aphasia). Its aim is to facilitate new quality of life for people who have acquired ongoing difficulties talking and using language. The outcomes were so positive that the group has grown and continues to meet weekly in the Hearing Hub at Macquarie University. Their self-expression through art has fostered new skills, new friendships, plus renewed self-esteem and identity. The group’s success has led to the artists exhibiting and selling some of their work and also producing commissioned work that is hung in public spaces at Macquarie University. The group is creatively facilitated by ArTrio.

Artists: Henry Chan, John Giliberti, Ollie Gonzalez, Alasdair McLennan, Stephen Thomson and Joanna Twomey.
